Businesses in Britain are so diverse that it's often hard to find one single piece of advice that affects every company, regardless of the type of business or the industry they operate within.

However, one thing that every business in the country needs is business insurance. That's regardless of whether the company employs 10 or 10,000 people, whether they're a B2B or B2C company or where they're based.

Business insurance is a complex issue, because different types of businesses have different needs, the fact remains that every business needs it.

The purpose of business insurance is to protect the company, and the owner, in case anything goes wrong. That could be anything from an accident that damages the building, to an accident that injures a coworker. As a result, a business needs to be insured against all events that could potentially happen. The type of insurance, and level of coverage needed, will always depends on the business but brokers or business insurance providers will be able to draw up a rounded insurance policy which will cover all the angles.

If you have a business premises, that must be insured to cover the risk of fire or lightning, explosion, malicious damage, storms, floods or damage from vehicles, subject to the location of the premises and other variables. It could also be beneficial to cover against accidental damage, electrical breakdown or general deterioration of the building, if appropriate.

Another important type of business insurance involves covering contents. This is particularly useful if the building is home to expensive machinery, whether it's standard computers, massive manufacturing machines or specialist equipment that is vital to business functions.

It's also worth pointing out that you might need insurance if you work from home too. Household insurance won't cover work equipment, or provide any public liability or professional indemnity cover which are essential.

Because each business is so different, it's often best to consult a business insurance provider to be certain that the right types of policies are taken out, at the correct level of cover. It doesn't make sense to pay out for cover that exceeds the needs of the company, but at the same time not taking out the correct policies could destroy the business in the aftermath of an accident.
